Laurelwood District, Chehalem Mountains
Vista Grande
Vista Grande is where de la boue began. It was the first site we ever worked with, and in 2021 it became our first vineyard to farm end to end. Travis farms it organically himself, which means every decision from pruning in January to the last pick in fall happens with our own hands.
The vineyard sits between 700 and 800 feet, among the highest elevations in the Willamette Valley. It faces east and tilts slightly north, so the fruit has to work to ripen. In hot years that keeps the wines fresh; in cool years it gives remarkably elegant, perfumed wines. On a clear day you can see Mt. Adams, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainier and Mt. Hood from the rows.
The real magic is underground: volcanic basalt mixed with windblown loess and Laurelwood soil over an ancient riverbed. Those soils hold just enough water in dry years and drain well in wet ones. Planted in 1998 to Dijon and Pommard clones of Pinot Noir, Vista Grande gives us our most delicate, aromatic wine, and we make it with a light hand to keep that nuance in focus.
